Birdsong – depending on where you live, it is probably available to you to hear every morning, if you just listen. Maybe the birds are a noisy and unwelcome alarm clock. Or maybe you allow yourself to wake gently, as if serenaded by nature’s choir. Perhaps traffic noise drowns out their chirpy chattering. Perhaps it is all about what you choose to hear.
I woke up this morning, having snoozed through my actual alarm, and was stirred by the cacophony. I decided to go outside and really listen, and to record the chorus.
This was just as well as my mind was blank, I had no blog post in my head, and none written, leaving me totally unprepared to join in the Tuesday blog link-up with the lovely Jess for IBOT.
So what do I offer you now – birdsong! Stop and listen (it’s less than a minute). Close your eyes and just hear.
I have to say birds certainly are a chirpy bunch (or flock), whatever the weather. No such thing as a bird bad mood! (but then there are Angry Birds!).

So this is going to be a short and sweet (as in sweet birdsong) post, with a simple message.
Ask yourself the questions:
What songs are being drowned out by the noise of busyness in my life?
What music is muffled by the incessant natter of negative self-talk?
What notes am I missing because I’m not listening for the pauses in life, and so the sounds all run into each other like the clanging of so many pots banging together – or a crazy, loud cacophony of birdsong?
You have to listen out for the harmony in life. And while you’re listening, open your eyes and really look around. It’s beautiful out there.

Lovely post, Kathy. I often sit in silence and just listen. It is very calming, and it’s amazing what sounds you can hear when you really make an effort to listen.
Thanks Jodi. I always think the birds are so chirpy, not matter the morning. But this morning I was just desperate for some words to come into my head!
Lovely post and I can very much understand. I’ve mentioned before I live opposite the ocean and rarely take a moment to consciously gaze out at the world before me. My glimpses are usually just as I’m walking from room to room. And yet… it’s so lovely.
I would definitely be taking those pauses Deborah. I think gazing at the ocean might help with writer’s block too – at least that’s what I need help with at the moment.
Kathy, this is so simple and straight to the point and exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you. xx
Simple and straightforward was all I could manage today Bec, so glad it helped. X
Loved it Kathy! I love ‘birdsong’!! I had a terrible night’s sleep last night. In fact I didn’t really sleep at all – perhaps I snatched an hour. My mind needs stilling – it’s gone all monkey on me. I don’t recall hearing any birds when I woke but you’ve reminded me to listen out for them. Will you be at PB on Thurs avo for networking drinks? Really looking forward to meeting you! xo
Looking forward to meeting you too Min. Yes I’ll be there. I’m only around the corner actually. Let’s email or chat beforehand.
Aaaah yes, we back right onto the bush so our birdsong is our “noise”. I love it, because it is such peaceful noise. Except for the cockatoos. Those guys are rowdy buggers!
Sometimes they make a racket don’t they! But I still get inspired by the fact that they sing and chatter no matter the weather or the day. Wish I could always be so cheerful.
Lovely Kathy. Part of the year we are woken way too early by myna birds. Hate their noise (thanks to no daylight savings they wake me between 430 and 530 all summer long!). Your birds on the other hand are singing. And at a more reasonable hour
We are early risers in summer too and need to be because of our noisy birdie neighbours.
Lovely post. We live near the water and I often sit in the quiet of the morning (before the kids and the city wake up) listen to the sounds of nature – it’s very calming
Your Sydney vistas (you must take some near your place) always make me pine a bit for Sydney harbour. And even in the midst of the city there are birds.
“What music is muffled by the incessant natter of negative self-talk?” Nailed it!
Turn of the talk Lydia and sing along to the music.
There is nothing more beautiful than birdsong. I can’t imagine the world without it.
It would be very quiet Laurie. And a bit sad.
That is indeed a lovely birdsong. We don’t get a whole heap of birds singing here, mainly because there are no big trees, every know and then a magpie sits outside on a light post and sings away, it makes my heart sing. I love birds. There is a forest walk not to far from me that has plenty of birds though. Leaving some belated fairy wishes and butterfly kisses from #teamIBOT
Thanks Rhianna.
