We all need to talk ourselves up, since we often spend most of the time talking ourselves down.

But we don’t do we? We allow ourselves a moment of satisfaction when something succeeds, we might give ourselves a sideways approving glance when we are dressed up to go somewhere special, or we might even give ourselves a secret high-five when someone else says we’ve done something good.

If you are like me, as I much as I believe in the positive power of making affirmations, I find it very icky to stand in front of a mirror and tell myself that I’m beautiful, lovable, kind, successful. So I don’t do it. I consider myself doing well when I don’t stand in front of the mirror and tell myself that I’ve failed, that I’m looking old, that I’m being selfish or when I don’t simply notice those wrinkles and the odd stray hair sprouting on my chin – where the hell did they come from?

As much as I believe in self-reliance and cultivating inner confidence, the best I can manage most days is to try to turn down the volume on my inner critic.

So I’m grateful for my partner (when he props me up) and my family, friends, and any other coaches in my corner for their words of encouragement. Sometimes I manage not to squirm in their praise. Mostly I try to tell myself I don’t need recognition, because it can be pretty hard to come by (particularly at work).

It’s getting towards the end of the year – we’re all busy, we’re all tired and most likely we’re all feeling a bit flat.

So I want to be a coach in your corner for this little Pep Talk video.

It’s one minute of me telling YOU what you need to hear, what we all need to hear but what we are likely not telling ourselves (or not often enough).

So listen (to my sexy, husky voice from a damn summer (or spring actually) cold) and allow yourself to really hear how good you are. Because I’m telling you, you are!

Do you use positive affirmations? (I have some yin yang affirmations – what I call realistic -not trite – affirmations here).  Do you tell other people you love them more than you tell yourself?

I might make more of these pep talks, with different points of encouragement and maybe a bit of a rev-up (when maybe you need a rev-up). Do you need a pep talk/rev up?

    Thank you for the pep talk Kathy! I so needed that and I really enjoyed hearing you! I listened intently to all the words that you said and replayed for a 2nd time! Is that your hand hi-fiving at the top of the post because my hand fits almost exactly over it. I have tiny hands. A huge hi-5 to you. I absolutely loved this post and would welcome more pep talks in the future! 😉 xo

    Oh, you’re too kind 😉
    You’re right. We do need to give ourselves little inner pep talks. We can be our own worst critics, when the truth is, if it wasn’t us, we’d be filled with compassion and love for that person in the same situation.

    High five to you !! I loved listening to that pep-talk – you are so right – we are often there to talk up others but very seldom do we talk up ourselves. Someone said to me the other day – talk to yourself the way you would talk to a good friend – and that really sat with me – and when I find myself beating myself up over something or berating myself for something I did (or didn’t) do, I think about whether I would talk to a good friend like that and I try to stop. It’s a new concept to me but one I am working hard on.

    High five back at ya, Kathy! You’re so right. We are so quick to beat ourselves up and rarely praise ourselves or give ourselves a pat on the back.Thanks for the pep talk. I think we all need it at this time of year xx

    Yep this is the pep talk I need. But actually this week I’ve been okay on myself – although the interview went shocking with Channel 7 – I mumbled my way through it and just hope they can edit it so I sound smart… keep you posted on that x

    Thanks Kathy. I particularly liked the bit about what you were told as a child. An affirmation-type phrase that came to me earlier in the year that seems to help me in times of doubt – “I give myself permission to soar”. xx

    I agree. Sometimes it’s just enough to turn down the inner-critic channel and get to a point where it’s okay to get back to the affirmations again. It’s been a tough week.
