Get your sexy on – the second chakra

If you’ve lost touch with your sensuality, feel lacking in creativity or just feel like you can’t live out your passions, then it might be time to tickle the fancy of the second (also known as sacral or sexual) chakra.

If you missed my pocket guide to our rainbow of seven chakras, you might like to start with the overview before jumping straight into sex!

Next I looked at how we need to feel grounded in our first (also known as root) chakra if we are to keep our energy flowing and move on from our basic concerns about safety and survival towards the ultimate bliss of enlightenment (let alone sexual pleasure).

So if you’re feeling secure, it’s time to get all touchy feely, by talking about the second chakra, or Svadisthana in Sanskrit (meaning sweetness or in another definition ‘one’s own place’, an analogy for a sweet spot).

Since we’re on the topic of sex, I may as well be upfront and say that I have had serious issues with my second chakra.

Physically, I wonder if my infertility and pregnancy loss experience was a manifestation of a weakness or blockage in the second chakra, which governs not just pleasure and sexuality but our ability to create, and our underlying sense of self-worth. Conception and birth is the ultimate expression of creative love.

We need to feel free to own our desires and to express our emotions, but our society often frowns on feelings in favour of rationality. This suppresses our innate creativity that draws its energy from our second chakra – everything we create, whether it be a painting, poem, recipe, room design or new concept is fuelled by the creative energy of the second chakra.

Our society also burdens us with a lot of sexual conditioning and damage caused by sexism, not to mention the collective history of sexual abuse – this can impact our individual second chakra energy. (I don’t think the whole Irish Catholic sexual guilt/plain ol’ guilt legacy helped me much).

When we have the energy and passion to create with a depth of feeling, to feel joy and pleasure in our passions, alive in our bodies, and open and intimate in our relationships then we have a healthy sacral chakra. 

Physically, the second chakra is located as a band of energy about 2cm below the belly button and wrapping around our hips and sacral (lower) spine. It is associated with our reproductive organs, hips, pelvis, lower back, kidneys and bladder.

As the rainbow goes, the second chakra is associated with the colour orange (incidentally I hardly ever wear orange, but suspect many of us don’t wear this vibrant colour often).

But check out my new yoga gear – sunset bright! And this (slightly embarrassing) photo in ‘frog pose’ – an intense hip-opening posture – perfect for unlocking sacral chakra energy.

The second chakra is also associated with all watery things – from tears to menstruation, urination and orgasm. Water wants to flow, and a healthy second chakra supports not only our bodily flow functions but our creative juices and our overall sense of being able to ‘go with the flow’ in life and relationships – how open we are to loving and being loved.

If you have tight hips, chances are trapped emotions are to blame – ‘the issues are in the tissues’ as they say, and the hips can hold a lot of that tension. Open those hips girl!

The energy of the second chakra is soft, feminine and inward facing, yet still powerful (just as water is powerful, even while it is yielding). We have to allow and surrender to open our hips and unlock the energy of our sacral chakra, just as we can’t force creativity, intimacy or genuine feelings.

As we allow ourselves to accept what is, we taste the sweetness (and bittersweetness) of life. When we relax our resistance to life, our hips let go, our reproductive organs become less tense, and we’re open to experiencing our sensuality and sexuality.

      Frog pose is a pretty full-on hip opener but there are other postures you can try – I’ll post some of them Deb. The bright tights are all the rage at the moment in yoga classes, but it took me a while to be brave enough to move away from my standard black ones – bright tops I’ve been ok with, but otherwise I’ve been boring black.

    My youngest daughters favourite colour is orange. I think that’s kinda cool.
    I’d love to try that pose, it looks like it would do me some good. I am not sure how I would go getting back up off the floor though! 🙂

      Hi Alicia – frog pose really needs to be supported with a bolster (cylinder shaped cushion) and it is a case of slowly, slowly. I will post some more hip-openers that are perhaps a little easier to start with. Your daughter must have a bright personality to match her vibrant colour choice. thanks for visiting.

    Those tights are amazing and that frog pose – well I’ll give it a try but not sure I will be able to do it!! Very interesting to read about the second chakra. I know nothing about chakras and would really like to learn about them.

      Thanks Min – you get into a frog pose in yin yoga using a bolster (a cylindrical shaped cushion) – you lower down over it and if you hips are open enough, eventually you can get them to the ground – a lot of people can’t so don’t worry. I’ll be continuing on with the series on chakras so keep an eye out.

      So glad Deb – I might add some specific yoga poses at the end of the series for the chakra – I reckon the second chakra is one a lot of us need to ‘work on’.

    LOve the frog pose – I do that one naturally when I faceplant. When we were trying for our first son after a miscarriage I had some reiki done and the gorgeous woman told me I had a blockage in that chakra, most likely from the miscarriage. She did her stuff and that night we conceived our son. I was sold on reiki every since xx

      That is amazing Sonia – no wonder you really believe in Reiki! I had an ectopic pregnancy on my right side (and lost the tube)and it is my right hip that is out – all these years I’ve tried different things, maybe I just need to find the right healer. Other than the faceplant approach, best to approach getting into frog with a bolster cushion and a fair bit of patience!

    Oh god, I have to say it and forgive me Kathy – I’m surprised the sexual energy chakra isn’t the ‘root’ chakra. See? See how immature and unyogary I am. Mind you, I do practice yoga and I absolutely love it. The frog pose saved me after my three babies were born within 4 years of each other – lotta blockage going on there and the frog pose helped me release so much pelvic tension. Your tights are fabulous. I can see why orange makes us feel good. x

      Bron – I think there is still something sexual in the ‘root’ chakra, especially the getting down and dirty bit! The root chakra is a ‘yang’ energy chakra (no surprises there that the males like a root) and the second chakra is a softer, feminine energy, so put them together and….! I’m feeling brave with my bright tights, getting away from the boring black. Glad you like frog and yoga in general. X

    It looks like you have found an issue close to many of our hearts. I only started looking at the chakra’s more closely after I had my little one and was feeling a bit out of touch and flat. It’s great to read your break down of them and their potential to influence our lives. I’m starting to feel more open since I’ve being doing a more regular yoga practice lately. I would love to see your tips on the hip opening – just so I don’t jump into things too fast with the frog 🙂
