The toilet roll needs changing, again. And again, and again, and again, and again, and again. Every. Single. Time.




The clothes are lying on the bathroom floor, again. And again, and again, and again, and again. Every. Single. Time.




The shoes are left where I’ll trip over them, again. And again, and again, and again, and again. Every. Single. Time.




The light turns red because I’m running late. You get the drift.





The secret to finding grace is to find gratitude amidst frustration.

Simply saying the word, Gratitude, as I’ve been doing lately, and allowing something, anything that you are grateful for to spring to mind, resets the frustration and maybe even the pain. Annoyance is replaced with appreciation.

You trick your brain into forgetting that frustrating thing and instead bask in gratitude for that cute thing your child did yesterday or the sunrise you saw the other morning.

If you can be grateful in the actual moment for the actual frustrating or painful thing then that’s grace on steroids. I’m working on finding that kind of grace.

There’s a lot to be said for gratitude journaling, for #everydaygrateful Instagram hashtags and for meditations focusing on gratitude (I’m doing the Deepak Chopra/Oprah Winfrey meditation series on Gratitude & Grace at the moment).

But I reckon the real power of gratitude is how it unlocks the grace we have inside ourselves, especially when we find gratitude when it’s hard going and not simply in the moments when your kid does that cute thing or the sun rises in splendour.

Grace is not some rare blessing, or good fortune bestowed on those who seem to live a charmed, beautiful and refined existence.

Grace is the elegance of synchronicity, of things falling into place, when we use gratitude to surrender to the universe. We move from annoyance and frustration, straight through acceptance and into gratitude and then magically into grace.

Gratitude and grace are like yin and yang – you can’t have one without the other. Or more correctly you are blind to grace without gratitude. It is gratitude that opens your eyes, your heart and your soul to the gifts of grace.

Right now (well a few moments ago), I was grateful as I lay on the couch, for the winter sun streaming in, even though I’m sick, and this is the second bout of sickness in the last couple of weeks.

Now I’m grateful that I’ve finally finished this post, which has sat half-written for a few days – you know sickness and busyness and all.

    Gratitude is something I make a conscious effort to weave into my every day! It helps change my mindset when I start to think a little too negatively. I rein it in and refocus my mind on something I am grateful about. It changes the whole feel of that present moment and sets me on a more positive path for the remainder of the day. I love that you’ve associated Grace with gratitude because Grace to me represents having good manners, being courteous and respectful, and being dignified – all attributes that living with gratitude will bring! 🙂 x

      Thanks Min – you know I think that having Grace is really about presence and self-assurance to allow the universe to work its wonders. That comes through in a dignified acceptance and gratitude for how things are, in patience, courtesy and respect as you say.

    well done on finishing your post! Yes, to all of those frustrations and yes to trying to stay grateful and graceful amongst it all. It is a challenge though.. It’s hard to understand why when ultimately our lives are so privileged. The human mind is a complicated thing I guess

      Thanks Liz – you are so right – if we stopped to think about things we would realise we should be permanently grateful for all the things we get to enjoy in our western world lives.

    Hope you’re feeling better soon. Gratitude and grace are two of my favourite principles to live by. I often say grace is the grease on the wheels of any relationship but particularly in a marriage 😉

    “the real power of gratitude is how it unlocks the grace we have inside ourselves” – this is so lovely! Being grateful, present and enjoying now are mindsets I try to incorporate in my own life. Although it’s easy to overlook this and let the busyness of life take over, it’s amazing how powerful positive thoughts can be. Hope you feel better soon!

    Bring thankful is ingrained in me after practising it for years and years. There is a lightness of head and heart that comes with leading a grateful life. I have also found lately that there is power in teaching myself how to block negativity. That’s the next step that I’m working on. x

      I reckon you’d be great at blocking out negativity – you are such a positive and grateful person. I know I will always be a work in progress when it comes to stamping out judgement in particular.

    Hey Kathy,

    This is the first time to your blog and I am grateful.

    For a while I was having a problem with gratitude, I just did not want to see it or feel it, especially in times when things got tough. However something has changed, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I don’t mind. Ever since I began blogging I seem to have gratitude for writing and connecting with an amazing bunch of people.

    This always seems to shift my mood and gives me time of actually being in the now and truly enjoying what I am doing. How could I not find gratitude and grace in that. Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it.

I definitely feel grateful for the connections you make through blogging and I think the process of writing blog posts is a great way to reflect and hopefully look for gratitude and grace in what life brings. And I love being inspired by what other people write.

      Thanks Monique. I just went and looked at your blog and it looks great. Your post about Tokyo brought back some great memories and made me realise how much there is to see (we only had 3 nights there as part of a ski trip last year – will have to go back).
