Teaching my first yoga class!

Kathy Krugerchange, find your flow, yoga35 Comments

It came as a surprise last Friday as I came out dripping from a sweaty flow class – I was in the right (if the scary) place at the right time at my hot yoga studio – Can you teach a class on Monday?!?

I nearly sweated bucket-loads more. YES! I said, confident (shaking in my own sweat) that I’d be fine.

So a couple of weeks earlier than I’d expected, before we even finish our training, I taught my first class (with a fellow trainee) last night.

How did we go?

I somehow managed to keep a handle on my nerves (that would be the power of yoga breathing) and once I got started I managed to find my flow (how funny is that when that’s pretty much what I’m trying to do, and help others to do, with my blog). My co-teacher also sounded calm, composed and confident.

I didn’t forget anything (or anything important that I can remember!) and I even felt comfortable as I got my rhythm going. I know I probably managed to say something really smart like ‘bring your ankles and feet together’ but I think I minimised my ‘ums and ahs’.

I smiled, I felt the part, and although I know I can improve on my body language, I think I may have looked the part.

And how did it feel – well AWESOME.

We even got a few of these –

So it’s all feeling a bit surreal now – like any FIRST I guess. I find myself needing feedback (only natural) and reassurance – and that will come. Yet I also feel content within myself that I did my best, and that my best was pretty darn OK.

What’s more I’m feeling like my BEST is enough for me, regardless of what anyone else thinks. No matter how much I try to focus on building this inner self-confidence, no matter how many times I’ve tried to explore these ideas in my writing – to talk, or write myself into ‘thinking’ confidently and not caring what others think, tonight for the FIRST time (at least in a while) I simply FELT it.  I didn’t over-think or over-feel things (and then over-think them some more). I just felt like I was where I was meant to be. And you know what that felt like….

So in other exciting news, I’m now a fortnightly blog columnist for DoYouYoga.

I’ll be a featured blogger under the name Yogini Mother (not much different to Yinyang Mother) and I hope to get some nice experience and exposure out of my involvement (because goodness knows guest blogging pays so much these days – $0). Mostly I hope to increase and share my knowledge and love of yoga with other mad yogis, rather than bore you too much all the time with everything yogic.

Here are the four posts I’ve had published so far (go on click, you know you want to):

8 ways yoga fills you up when you’ve got nothing left to give (mothers – this one is for you)

Why you’re never too old to teach (or learn) yoga (people of my vintage or older will appreciate)

How to turn your yoga class into a gratitude meditation (we can all be grateful)

Find your balance – let go AND let in (a yoga take on my favourite subject)

Fist-pumping, or should I say high yoga-prayering.

What’s your most recent FIRST? How did it feel? (not sure if I’m getting into dangerous territory here).

Linking up with Jess for another IBOT.

Kathy, that’s wonderful news, both the teaching and the writing gig! Congratulations!!!
This is what happens when you have faith in your abilities, it just flows on to others (see what I did, right there?)
Good on you for your successes, you’ve worked hard for them xx

Congratulations! Glad to hear your first class went well. My “first” is blogging. Still very new to it all but I have to say, I have been so thrilled to meet such a lovely group of bloggers (like yourself). What great communities we are a part of. Let us know how the next class goes x

Congratulations on both accomplishments! $0 or not, it’s a statement to the universe that you are awesome! I’m a big believer in one opportunity leading to others, and it’s great for your profile, portfolio and accumulated experience as a writer, plus all the network building as well. And well done on the teaching as well!

  4. Annaleis from Teapots and Tractors

Congratulations on both! I think you will be a fabulous Yoga teacher. really wish someone would teach it in my small town – I need someone to keep me doing the exercises and not getting distracted.

  5. Kylie Purtell - A Study in Contradictions

Congratulations on your first class! It’s a great feeling, get that first of something you really wanna do out of the way. Funnily enough my most recent first was shooting my first family photography sessions with actual paying customers just over a week ago. I finished editing their photos and uploaded them for the clients to see and the feedback I got was amazing and has really helped my confidence. The whole experience has really made me realise that this is what I want to be doing and has given me even more drive to work harder and make it happen.

Kathy it’s like you have found your calling, things have changed so much for you in the past year and I’m so happy for you. Congrats on teaching a class, you’d be awesome! And for being a special yoga writer, another big win. Hugs lovely, here’s to you (and I’ll have a cup of tea for you since you’re still doing Octsober) xx

Yay! Congrats on getting out there and just doing it. Recently I was interviewed on the radio about my blog and I nearly talked myself out of doing it. The internal talk was all negative and I was struggling to turn it around. I pushed it all down, knowing that I would kick myself if I didn’t take the opportunity and did it. Once I listened to the interview, I was so glad that I went with it, because it sounded great.

Kathy, this post is full of brilliant news. I can just imagine you saying yes when you were asked to teach. It must be an amazing feeling. I’d love to do one of your classes sometime down the track. I’ve seen you promoting your DoYouYoga, but I haven’t had a chance to read yet. So happy for you that everything is falling into place x

Thanks Renee – love you to do a class at some stage, or I’ll just do an impromtu one, followed by a catch-up over drinks. I guess piece by piece, things are coming together slowly.
