I may or may not be very wise, but I reckon there’s only one place to find wisdom – inside yourself. If you’re looking anywhere else you’re going to be disappointed.
We don’t get wise through reading bookings (any more than from consulting fortune cookies), as I wrote about last week when I was grappling with our son’s ‘diagnosis’ of delayed learning.
What we do is bring our knowledge and life experience with us as we look inward to rediscover what we already know. All external learning and life lessons are only as valuable as our capacity to internalize them.
Looking inward – using our third eye, or the energy of the 6th chakra (Ajna), means rediscovering the wisdom of intuition that we were born with. This is the sixth post in my series on our chakra energy system. I hesitated in writing it, worrying that wisdom was the pre-requisite for postulating about our third eye – but hey, I figure I’m as wise as the next person who looks inside themself for answers.
So where to start?
We understand the third eye through exercising it.
Close you eyes, slow your breathing, and focus on the spot in the middle of your eyebrows. Imagine it is actually an eye, a portal looking inward to your soul. Spend at least thirty seconds just getting in touch with that sensation.
Go on, do it now!
Now open your eyes – what did you see? What did you feel? Maybe nothing. Maybe the colour purple, which is associated with the third eye – our sixth sense.
I see the colour purple quite a lot when I meditate, when I close my eyes at the end of a yoga practice and in snatches of quiet, eyes-closed moments throughout the day. It feels like wisdom is there, somewhere, but it can feel elusive.
I get the feeling of looking back, as if I already know something and just need to combine that inner knowing with my sense observations of the current situation in order to be perceptive and make good decisions. I feel like it is my third eye that helps me reflect, that provides distance between my thoughts and actions and injects imagination into my ideas.
The third eye Chakra is associated with the pituitary gland, which is the size of a pea and located just behind the middle of the forehead. The pituitary gland prompts the proper growth of glands and organs and regulates sexual development. It is considered to be the ‘seat of the mind’ or reason.
The third eye, along with the seventh chakra at the crown of the head, is also associated with the pineal gland, an endocrine gland in our brain that produces melatonin, which helps regulate sleep and dreaming.
Aside from the Hindu/yoga concept of chakras, the third eye is also recognized in Taoism and other philosophical traditions. French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes believed the pineal gland to be the “principal seat of the soul” and viewed it as the third eye.
When the third eye Chakra is balanced we experience high mental ability, we are able to separate between reality and imagination and best combine logic and emotion. We gain clarity and insight. A healthy third eye encourages intuition, empathy, imagination, creativity and trust in ourselves.
A closed or blocked sixth chakra will keep you stuck in analytical, busy, churn mode, which is exhausting and stressful.
Physically a blocked third eye will manifest in frequent headaches, upper/frontal sinus conditions, neurological disorders, disorders of the eyes or ears and disorders of the outer brain.
The third eye is associated with psychic abilities and even if you don’t believe in ‘mumbo-jumbo’, meditating with focus on the third eye area can have real benefits in bringing you in touch with your own inner wisdom.
We can all be more genuinely reflective in our busy lives (rumination isn’t good) and focusing on breath, sound vibration (the ‘mmmm’ sound will connect you to your third eye), as well as doing free-writing and certain yoga postures will help you balance your sixth chakra. This article might help.
So that’s it – all the wisdom I can offer on the third eye, along with some beautiful purple flowers to meditate on. You’re welcome. (and if you want to check out the other posts in my chakra series – 1st (or root chakra), 2nd (of sexual chakra), 3rd chakra (solar plexus), 4th (heart) chakra, 5th (throat) chakra.
Linking up with Essentially Jess for another IBOT (lovely to meet you Jess last week on the Goldie).
Tell me, is your third eye all-seeing? What do you wish it would see? (Image credit)
